Thanksgiving
Find Your Thanksgiving Costume in Your Closet

Halloween represents a time where children and adults alike can have fun dressing up as something else. But who ever said that costumes had to be just for Halloween? Don’t leave your creativity tied to the last day of October—let it flow through November, and dress up for Thanksgiving! Whether you have kids who would love to see their parents in costume at the Thanksgiving table (and maybe join them in costume), or whether you just want to have a little light fun on one of our nation’s great holidays, giving thanks is just another great reason to dress up in a costume. See our Halloween Party Ideas.
Of course the best way to have fun is to save money by doing it. Decide what Thanksgiving figure you’d like to dress up as, and start looking in your closet and drawers to find the perfect Thanksgiving costume.
Pilgrims
You can honor our country’s first settlers by dressing up as a pilgrim. For the female pilgrim, every woman has a little black dress, right? Whether it’s short or long, a black dress can be the base for your pilgrim garb. You can be either a conservative pilgrim in a longer dress or skirt or a sexy version in a short black dress or skirt. Drape a black shawl or sweater around your shoulders for your cape, tie a white scarf around your chin for a bonnet, and you’re ready for the feast.
For the men, get out that white business shirt and button up every last button. Add suspenders if you’ve got them, and hook them to your black pants, which can be tucked into your socks. Add a hat with a cardboard or tinfoil buckle taped to it, and you’ll be a smashing pilgrim!
Native American Pride
You can also honor our Native American ancestors by dressing up as our pilgrims’ guests from that first Thanksgiving meal. Moccasins are in these days, so if you’ve got a pair, you’re set (plain slippers will work, too). Ladies, if you’ve got a neutral colored dress, put it on, and add all the beaded necklaces and bracelets you’ve got! Men, find some tan or brown pants with a matching shirt and borrow some of those necklaces. You can cut some feathers out of construction paper and secure them to the back of your head with a headband or sweatband, even, and you’ll be ready to share in the great meal of thanks.
Turkeys Are Not Just Food
Maybe you’d prefer to honor the birds that make each Thanksgiving Day such a hit across the country! Find a big sweatshirt (preferably brown or tan), and stuff it will pillows or newspaper. Ladies can secure the stuffing with tights or stretch pants; men can stick with sweatpants. The fun part, though, is the tail. Get out your construction paper, scissors, and tape, and create a colorful tail that fans across your back. For an added touch, you can always hang some red string or ribbon from your chin to make your wattle!
Whatever costume you choose to put on this Thanksgiving, have fun with it. You can make it as elaborate or simple as you’d like and get the kids involved. Giving thanks doesn’t mean you can’t dress up and have fun in costume!
