Kids are so excited about summer vacation. They are looking forward to relaxing, sleeping in, and likely watching as much television or playing as many computer games as possible. Your kids may think that sleeping in and having the freedom to play on the computer all day long is the ultimate summer. Show them how they can have a blast this summer without being glued to the television or computer! The trick is to find some fun summer activities for kids that peak their interests.
- Go to the Zoo – The zoo is a fun place to go; however, go when it is not too hot so the animals are not all sleeping.
- Go to the Park – Have a picnic at the park. Bring along a Frisbee or ball. Play Frisbee golf.
- Have a Relay Race – There are many summer activities for kids that involve relay races. Write them on separate pieces of paper and put them in a hat. When it is time for a relay race, pull out an idea and race!
- Wash the Car – This is productive and fun!
- Write a Summer Story – The entire family can get involved with this story. Write the story together. At the end of the summer, laminate the pages and create a cover. Make sure to put the date and authors of the book. Make pictures to make it more interesting.
- Keep a Journal – Have them make a journal with a cover. Tell your child to write down what they did that day and what their feelings were about specific events or incidents that happened.
- Special Day with Mom and Dad – Give your kids the gift of quality time. Take a day and spend it with just one child. Do whatever you want to do that day. The only rules are that you can’t watch television or play computer games.
- Have a Treasure Hunt – Everyone loves a treasure hunt. This can be a simple treasure hunt or a huge one. If you are short on time, simply make up a list of items for them to find. Hide the items and let them loose to find them. If you have more time, you can really have a blast making pirate hats, an ultimate treasure chest, etc.
- Spend time at the Library – The library offers many fun summer activities for kids that are generally free or low cost. Sign up for the reading program or one of the many free classes or activities they offer or just go for the day and read or play with the toys they provide.
- Try some Science Experiments – Go to your local library and check out a book with different science projects. These are great summer activities for kids and can be done all throughout the summer.
- Get out the Sidewalk Chalk - Sidewalk chalk is perfect for a number of fun summer activities for kids. Play hopscotch or four corners. Create a sidewalk chalk masterpiece.
- Make a Model House - Make a model house out of toothpicks and gum drops, pretzels and peanut butter, or graham crackers and frosting. Get creative. Your kids will have a blast creating their model house, and then they will have even more fun eating it!
These summer activities for kids are fun and will keep your kids off the computer or television and busy for hours and hours this summer.
