A summer family reunion is the perfect time to get together with family members you have not seen over the past year. Sadly, families get too busy in their daily lives and simply do not take the time to see their family members outside of their immediate family. This includes family members who live in the same town! Whether you have a casual summer family reunion, such as at a park or you have a more elegant summer family at a restaurant or hotel, there are some things you can do to make your summer family reunion that much more memorable.
Summer Family Reunion Ideas to make it Memorable
- Begin your reunion with a welcome address. Ask someone to deliver a welcome speech. You do not have to have someone who is an expert in speaking. You can even give the speech. The point is to welcome family members and to give announcements. Remember to include in your speech the following: welcome guests, mention new family members, mention the newest grandparents, mention the couple with the most children and grandchildren, etc. This helps people to feel special.
- Make a family recipe book. To do this, ask family members to reveal their favorite recipe. Include family and food related clipart. Give credit to all the contributors. Enter them into a word processor and take them to your local copy shop. They can put the recipes together in a book format and bind them for you. When asking for recipes, ask them to donate a specific amount to help with the charge of putting the books together.
- Make a large family wall chart for your summer family union. Gather all the information and make a chart that shows how everyone is related. Start with the ancestor and show all the cousins, aunts, uncles, etc. Show how everyone is connected. Do not forget to include everyone invited to the reunion. One way to ensure you have everyone is to ask those you invite to update you on new members of the family.
- Keep in touch throughout the year with a family newsletter. You do not have to do this every single month. Two or three times a year is a great way to keep family connected. Ask for a small donation at the summer family reunion to offset the costs of shipping and stamps. Ideas to include in the newsletter: special accomplishments, upcoming birthdays and anniversaries, new addresses, memorial stories on family members who have recently passed away, etc.
- Have a guest book at the summer family reunion to help keep updated on new family members. Have them sign in when they get there and before they leave, ask them to comment on the reunion or something funny that happened, etc. Keep all the books and bring them to future reunions.
- Make name tags. If you have time, consider writing the meaning of each person’s name on their tags. If time is not an option, just buy a pack of stick-on tags and have people write their own names on them.
You can have a pot luck reunion or have it catered. Don’t forget to have some games and activities for kids and adults. The above ideas are just a few that will make your summer family reunion special and memorable.
