Labor Day marks the end of summer and time for a last celebration before the relaxing days of summer are all gone. Most people celebrate with family. There are many Labor Day party ideas that can make your Labor Day picnic with your family memorable and fun. Of course, a picnic involves the four F’s- fun, food, friends, and family. Base your Labor Day party ideas on these and you will host the perfect picnic.
The first thing you will need to do is to find a location for your Labor Day picnic. Will it be at your home or a local park? If you intend on having the picnic at a local venue, make sure you make reservations if they are needed.
Labor Day Party Ideas – Food
Generally, summer picnics include grilled hamburgers, hotdogs, chicken, pork chops, and kabobs of many varieties. Add in some side dishes, such as: different varieties of corn on the cob, fruit salads, grilled green beans, campfire potatoes, baked beans, vegetable salads, etc.
Labor Day is not complete without dessert. Here are just a few to choose from:
- Berry Cheesecake Parfait
- Banana Split
- Banana Cheesecake or other varieties
- Apricot Berry Shortcake

- Watermelon
To make it easier on you financially, consider asking guests to bring a side dish and you will be responsible for the meat.
Labor Day Party Ideas – Games and Activities
Tug of War
Divide guests into two teams. Make sure the teams are equal on each side. Create a goal line, and then mark two starting lines on each side of the goal line. They simply pull as hard as they can until the other team has been pulled over the center goal line.
Three Legged Race
Have guests choose partners or you can assign them ahead of time. Each team should have a 2” wide piece of fabric to tie their two middle legs together. Make a starting and finishing line. The team to pass over the finish line first wins!
Relay Races
There are many different kinds of relay races you can have. Your imagination is really your only obstacle. In fact, relay races are all you really need to enjoy an entire afternoon. Here are just a few Labor Day party ideas for relays. Simply divide up into two teams and the team who gets finishes first wins.
- Crab Race – Move across the grass like a crab.
- Tunnel Relay – Have the team stand behind each other with their legs apart. The person that is last in the row crawls through the legs to the front and stands up.
- Leap Frog – Have team members bend over approximately one meter apart. Last person in line leaps over all the team members and goes to the front. Continue on until everyone has had a turn.
- Couple Crab Race – Two people hook their arms and run on all fours.
- Push the Ball – Push a tennis ball with your head or nose.
- Two Man Balloon Run – Make up an obstacle course and have two people use either their stomachs or heads to keep the balloon from touching the ground. No hands.
