Summer vacation is here. Kids have been anxiously waiting for that last day of school and the first day of summer vacation. There are many summer activities for kids to do in the summer, but some of those things might cost you some money. You don’t have to have a lot of money to make sure your kids have a blast this summer.
Here are some cheap and fun summer activities for kids to keep busy:
- Stock up on empty plastic bottles with squeeze type lids. Syrup bottles and ketchup bottles are perfect for this activity. When it is really hot outside, fill them up with water and let them chase each other around the yard.
- Make a special summer box full of outdoor items, such as sidewalk chalk, jump ropes, and balloons. Have different kinds of balloons available, such as water bomb balloons, extra long balloons to make balloon animals, swords, or flowers, and regular round balloons for a game of volleyball.
- Go outside on rainy days, as long as there isn’t any thunder or lightening. Kids love to play outdoors in the rain. Let them take out buckets to see how much water they can collect. Make up a scavenger hunt of things you can’t find on sunny days, such as frogs, toads, and worms. Make mud pies.
- When the kids can’t go outside because of the weather, make a rainy day box. Rainy day boxes are great to have. This box needs to have things in there that you don’t usually let them play with to make it more appealing. Fill it with special stickers, colored paper, hole punch, stapler, masking tape, crayons, markers, and special craft supplies so they can let their imaginations run wild. Kids can make a fort out of blankets, pillows, and couch cushions. This can make for hours of fun on a rainy day.
- Watch the clouds to see what shapes they look like. Watch how the clouds change from one thing to another as they move.
- If you live in the city, count the cars that pass by. Keep a list of the colors of cars to decide which color is the most popular. This is also a great way to sneak in some math during the summer.
- Take a litter hike. Walk down the road and pick up litter. Make sure to use gloves. Divide the litter into piles and make a pie chart of the different types of litter you found. This is another way to sneak in some education during the summer.
- Make a circle perimeter out of a hula hoop or string. Observe how much activity you see in just a half hour. It is amazing the different insects that will congregate through this circle. Keep a list of everything you see in the circle.
- Make a wind gauge and tie a lightweight scarf or strip of fabric to a dowel rod.
Summer is fun, but it can get boring and frustrating real fast if you are not prepared. Crafts are always great summer activities for kids. Stock up on all your craft supplies. Make sure the kids have enough fluids, especially if they are very active outside. If they do not get enough fluids, they can become dehydrated. With these cheap and fun summer activities for kids, they will keep busy and your kids will never whisper or scream those dreadful words, “I’m bored!”
