A Memorial Day party is a great way to start the summer season and to remember those you hold dear in your heart.  While people remember those they love and admire, Memorial Day began as a time to remember those who died protecting our nation.  Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday in May all throughout the country.

Memorial Day Party Invitations

Create your own red, white, and blue patriotic invitations.  Create a collage invitation with all kinds of red, white, and blue materials, such as construction paper, hair ribbon, sequins, bandanas, pom-poms, etc.   Glue pieces onto your cardstock.  Do not use a glue stick.  This will not hold the materials.  Be sure to find a way to add the basic party information.  If you would like them to bring a dish to share, make sure to remind them in the invitation.  Throw in some patriotic confetti to get your guests in the mood for a party.

Memorial Day Party Decorations

Stay with the red, white, and blue color scheme.  Create a Memorial Day party banner that welcomes your guests.  Crepe paper hung all around is an inexpensive way to give your Memorial Day party a patriotic look.

Add in a Liberty Bell or other national treasures.  Don’t forget the American flag.  Along with the American flag, there are other flag decorations you can hang, such as:  patriotic flags garland, waving flags borders, or patriotic star strings.

For the table, use patriotic paper goods.  Add in patriotic confetti and a red, white, and blue centerpiece.  Some ideas for centerpieces:

  • Fill balloons with sand.  Tie red, white, and blue balloons to the weighted down balloons.
  • Put out a red star centerpiece with some red votive candles around it.
  • Place plants that have red, white, and blue flowers in the center of the tables.  Tie bandanas around the pots.  Put pinwheels inside or flags inside the pots.

Memorial Day Party Foods

When you think of a Memorial Day party, you most likely think of a cookout.  It is the perfect time to heat up the grill.  Great grilling foods include:

  • Hot dogs
  • Hamburgers
  • Barbecued chicken
  • Butterfly pork chops
  • Brats
  • Steak

Serve these tasty grilled foods with potato salad, corn on the cob, baked beans, and fruit salad.

Desserts are the best part.   This is where you can stick with the red, white, and blue color scheme.  Here are some ideas for dessert:

  • Cake
  • Cupcakes
  • Cookies
  • Fresh strawberry shortcake
  • Blueberry or apple pie
  • Watermelon
  • Ice cream

Memorial Day Party Activities

Play some games and activities at your party that are fun for kids and adults.  Here are a few ideas:

Blindfold Cotton Ball Race

Play this game with 8 to 10 players.

Supplies

  • Bag of cotton balls
  • 4 bowls
  • 2 blindfolds
  • 2 spoons

Instructions

  1. Divide into two teams.  One player competes from each team at a time.
  2. Players start with 2 bowls in front of them.  One is empty and one is full of cotton balls.
  3. Blindfolded player must use spoon to transfer cotton balls from one bowl to the other in 45 seconds.
  4. Count how many cotton balls each player gets into the bowl.  The team with the most cotton balls transferred wins.

Body Part Tag

Play with a large group of people.  There needs to be an announcer and a tagger.  The announcer will call out a body part.  The person designated as the tagger must try to tag that part on the others.  When people are tagged, they join the tagger.  Keep the game going until everyone has been tagged.  Last person to be tagged wins the game.

These Memorial Day party ideas will ensure your party is a complete success.
