College Graduation Ideas for a Party Theme

A theme can tie together a college graduation party.  However, it is important to remember the main theme of the party is to celebrate and honor the college graduate.  Here are some college graduation ideas to tie in a theme:

  • Alma Mater Theme – Alma mater is the school you graduated from.  While high school graduates tend to center their graduation parties on the year they graduate, college graduates emphasize more on the school where they accomplished their goals.  Decorating with the mascot, emblem, and colors of the college is a great start.  If you would like a more formal graduation party for your college graduate, many of the college campuses will allow you to rent their halls or banquet rooms.  It is important to schedule this in advance, as many other families may have the same idea.
  • Career Theme – This is the perfect theme for the college graduate that knows exactly what he/she wants to do with his/her life after graduation.  Your college graduate has planned for a future in a specific career for many years.  Celebrate your college graduate’s accomplishments by decorating in the theme of his/her career path.
  • Vacation Theme – Rather than having a huge formal party, some graduates would love to celebrate their graduation with close friends and family on a weekend getaway, cruise, or some other type of trip.  This is a great way for your graduate to relax while celebrating his/her accomplishments before he/she heads out into the big world to make his/her mark.

While a theme can be fun, it is not required in order for a graduation party to be a success.  All that is necessary is that the graduate feels like he/she is the center of the attention, as he/she deserves to be.

College Graduation Ideas for Decorations

There are many graduation decorations available at most stores or you can make them yourself.  Some of the popular college graduation ideas for decorations include:

  • Mortar boards
  • Faux diplomas
  • School colors
  • Graduation year
  • Personalized alumni paraphernalia
  • High school graduation mementos
  • Accents of graduate’s career
  • Other honors of the graduate, such as athletic awards or honor societies
  • College Graduation Ideas for Food

The food served at a college graduation should be a little more sophisticated than just pizzas and sodas.  For a casual event, serve appetizers and hors d’oeuvres, such as:  Buffalo wings, layered dips, dips and spreads, meatballs, stuffed mushrooms, cheese ball, chicken fingers, etc.

For a more formal event, consider full catering for a dinner party complete with cocktails and a champagne toast to the new graduate.  Include non-alcoholic choices for those who do not drink alcohol. These college graduation ideas for a party are perfect for a casual or formal graduation party.  The important thing to remember is that the college graduation ideas you decide to use are centered on your special graduate.
