TOPIC: Daughter's Sweet 16 Help!

Daughter's Sweet 16 Help! 2 Years, 2 Months ago Karma: 1
My Daughter is about to be 16 year's old in a couple of months. Unfortunately, she has seen too much of that reality show that features 16-year olds having expensive parties.

Although I don't want to spend as much as what I saw on that show, I want to have something special for her. Any thoughts?

This is a tough one but you have to tell your daughter that you will do your best but no promises. The best way to do it is to inform your daughter about your plans for her party...no surprises.

The party could be expensive if there are too many extra activities and gifts from your end. What you can do is spend on food so that she can invite many of her friends. Instead of a band, get a local DJ to play club or house music. A Sweet 16 on a backyard with cool house music should be a great party.

Beth4life is right...let her face the reality early rather than getting her hopes up and be disappointed. That's why you have to stick to quantity of friends instead of the amount you have to spend.

Additional idea - have a traditional "girly" party: cakes, balloons and games. It's a bit traditional but with many friends attending, I don't think she would be missing anything.

The options for Sweet 16 party is almost unlimited. Ask your daughter what she wants and try to compromise on things that will happen and food that you'll prepare. Always remember that compromise is the key to a fun and satisfying party.

My suggested theme: have a gadget themed party. This means you'll use technology (internet) to give out invites, updates (Twitter) and even videos.
