Ideas and Tips for a Successful March Madness Selection Sunday Party

  • Game Plan - To ensure your first party goes smoothly, it is important to have a game plan. If you intend on having multiple parties, you will want to have two big bangs and then make it simple during the different games. March Madness Selection Sunday will be the first “big bang” and then the final games can be the last “big bang!” Make up a game plan to determine what you will do at each party.

  • Keep the Menu Simple - Choose snacks that are fun and flashy, yet can be made before the game. When you make the food ahead of time, you will be able to throw a great party without missing out on the games.

  • Game Brackets – Send out game brackets with your invitations. Selection Sunday is the best time to have them fill out game brackets. Sending them in the invitations gives your guests time to fill out the brackets before they arrive at your party. Search the Internet for free March Madness game brackets.

  • Basketball Pool - Have each guest guess the winner of the game and the score for each team. The person that comes closest will win the pool.

  • Game Colors – Orange and black are neutral basketball colors. If you want to rival it up a bit, decorate in your favorite team’s colors. If you know the colors of your guest’s favorite teams, you could decorate in different colors and have them sit in these areas.

  • Basketball Shaped Food – Make it fun by serving up food that is in the shape of a basketball, such as: sausage cheese balls, calzone pinwheels, stuffed potato skins, meatball pizza, cheese ball snack mix, and basketball cookies and cupcakes.

  • Dress up – Dress up as a referee with a referee jersey and a whistle. This is your party, so you get to be the referee! Have your guests wear jerseys or at least colors of their favorite team.

  • Basketball Trivia – Create a game with questions about the teams that are playing in the tournament on Selection Sunday. Have a prize ready for the person that gets the most answers right.

  • Pump it up – Throw in some music to pump up your guests for the games and the party. The ESPN “Jock Jams” collection is perfect for riling up the fans.

  • Activities – While the tournament is the focal point of your party, it is great to have something that can help them release that game tension in between games. Play a game of basketball, H-O-R-S-E, or have a dribbling contest. If it is too cold outside, consider buying inflatable balls and throwing hoops in the basement. See March Madness Party Activities.

  • Drinks – Store drinks in a cooler or tub. In addition to soda, water, and beer have a tub with sports drinks to give your party a game-like era.

Remember, this is only the beginning of the Madness in March! Begin your fun with a March Madness Selection Sunday party.
