Once the invitations have been sent and the atmosphere of the party has been set, it is time to determine how you will decorate to ensure your guests have a “slam dunk” experience. First, you need to determine what colors you will decorate with. Black, orange, purple, red, and blue are common colors for a March Madness party.
March Madness Decorating Ideas
- Set up the mood by having basketball memorabilia displayed in the party room. Hang up basketball posters, jerseys, hats, and other items related to basketball. Set up trophies and pennants around the room. Make banners to hang around the room.
- Create a welcome sign that welcomes your guests to the “your name” arena or the arena of your favorite team.
- Have basketballs displayed throughout the house.
- Add to the game atmosphere by playing music from “Jock Jams” or some other type of sports themed music.
- For the table, cover with a paper tablecloth that is set up to look like a basketball court. You could also just decorate in basketball colors. Another option is to write the names of the different teams competing in the tournaments. Purchase basketball plates and cups.
- Make a Final Four poster. March Madness comes down to tracking which four teams will make it to the Final Four. Make a Final Four poster with a large piece of poster board. Draw all the brackets on it, starting with the initial 65 teams. Add streamers, balloons and pennants to dress up the poster board.
- Make a basketball door cover. This is a fun way to greet your guests. Purchase a roll of white paper. With markers or paint, get creative.
How to Make a March Madness Pennant Banner
These are a really cool accent to your March Madness party. They are simple to make, yet will look like you put a lot of hard work into them.
Materials
- 12” x 12” cardstock or patterned paper
- Paper trimmer
- Ruler
- Ribbon
- Adhesive
- Chipboard letters or alphabet stamps
- Dimensional adhesive
- Embellishments
Instructions
- Decide what you want your banner to represent. Will it be the name of your favorite March Madness team or will it be a welcome banner? Decide how many letters are in your message and each letter will need a pennant.
- Cut cardstock in half with the paper trimmer. Each piece of 6” x 12” cardstock will make 3 pennants.
- You will now make triangle templates. To do this, take a ruler and make marks at the top at 1”, 6”, and 11”. Now go to the bottom of the cardstock and make a mark at the 3½“and 8½”. Draw lines from the 1” to the 3½” and up to the 6”. Then draw lines from the 6” to the 8½” and up to the 11”. This will create three triangle templates that can be used instead of measuring over and over again.
- Transfer the markings from the template by placing the template over the next piece of cardstock, but allow enough room on the back piece to mark from the template on top.
- Use a paper trimmer to cut diagonally from mark to mark. Cut off the outside edges first. It may be possible to cut through two pieces of cardstock at the same time. This will depend on your paper trimmer.
- Six pennants will come from one sheet of 12” x 12” cardstock or patterned paper.
- This will be your basic pennant. For an added look, layer the pennants. For example, you can make a border around the pennant by gluing the pennant to another piece of cardstock and cut around the pennant to make a border. If you have an orange pennant, you can border with black paper, or vice versa. This adds depth to the pennant.
- To create your banner, punch holes in the top corners of each pennant. Thread ribbon through the holes to attach to your banner ribbon. You could also attach the pennants to the ribbon with brads or eyelets. An even easier method is to staple the pennants to the ribbon.
- Add embellishments. You could add in basketball stickers or tie more ribbons in between each pennant to hide staples.
- Now, add in your letters. Attach your letters with dimensional adhesive.
- Display by hanging somewhere in your March Madness party room.
Your March Madness party will be a complete success with these March Madness party decorations.
