Saint Patrick was a missionary that converted the Irish to Christianity.  It has been said that Saint Patrick was not Irish. It has also been said that he was born in Scotland or in Roman Britain and that when he was 60 years old he went to Ireland to spread the Christian word.

St. Patrick’s Day Symbols and Legends

• Shamrock - This is one of Ireland’s most famous symbols.  Legend has it that Saint Patrick used a shamrock and its 3 leaves to explain the concept of the Trinity – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  It is also associated with good luck.
• Leprechaun – This is an elf like creature that represents a small, old man.  They live in the woods and hide from everyone.  They like to make shoes in their spare time.
• Pot of Gold at the end of a Rainbow – Leprechauns are said to keep their pots of gold at the end of a rainbow.  Legend has it that a leprechaun will share his pot of gold if he likes you, and some stories say that you must catch him, and he will take you to his pot of gold.
• Blarney Stone – The Blarney Stone is an actual stone that is in the wall of the Blarney Castle in the Blarney, an Irish village.  Legend has it that kissing the stone will give you the gift of speaking convincingly to everyone you meet.  It is not easy to achieve this task.  You must lie on your back and bend your head backwards and downwards in order to reach it.
• Snake – Legend claims that Saint Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland and into the sea by beating on a drum.  Snakes were considered to be a symbol of evil; therefore, Saint Patrick drove the evil out of Ireland.

Decorations to Make with these Symbols

• Shamrock Wreath – Wrap greenery around a round wire.  Add in some natural clovers with some paper shamrocks.
• Pots O’ Gold Door Decoration – Create a rainbow with Mylar, paper, or crepe paper by streaming them across the door and having them end in a lower corner at a paper pot filled with paper gold.
• Shamrock Banner – Create a shamrock banner.  A banner can be used in different ways.  Using large shamrock templates, spell out phrases, such as “Happy St. Patty’s Day.”  Just draw letters on the shamrock with permanent markers or cut the letters out and glue them on.  Create a garland like banner with a small shamrock template.   Use fishing line instead of ribbon to keep the focus on the shamrocks.  See below on how to make a shamrock banner.

How to Make a Shamrock Banner

Materials

• Shamrock template
• Green cardstock, foam, or felt
• Scissors
• Green or black marker
• Craft glue
• Green or gold glitter
• Single-hole punch
• Green ribbon

Instructions

1. Draw or print out a shamrock template in any size you desire.
2. Cut out shamrock.  Use it to create the shamrock pieces for the banner.
3. Trace shamrock template onto the green paper, foam, or felt.  It does not matter which you use.  Paper is easier to work with, while foam is thicker, and felt can add texture.  Consider using a mixture for a dimensional look.  Make as many shamrocks as you need.
4. Cut out shamrocks.
5. Make a glue border and sprinkle with green or gold glitter.  Shake off excess and allow them to dry.
6. After dry, punch holes in the top of each shamrock and thread ribbon or fishing line through the holes.
7. Hang over the door, the fireplace, or on a wall.  Make a few different ones with different phrases.
